The hard times we’re living through are relative (everything is), but it’s mostly tough all over. Here at Eurocheddar HQ, we’ve reported on some of the understandable safe harbors of investment – from vintage wine to the escalating bullion market – for those who can invest. The economic news is generally dire on both sides of the Atlantic (the Guardian newspaper just reported on migrant workers from Poland being forced to eat rats and sleep rough due to unemployment in the capital), and things are certainly not rosy in The States, either, although vermin is probably not being consumed (excluding Detroit).
After reading countless profiles of people losing $50k jobs to then end up sleeping in their car, it’s a nice respite to learn from Bloomberg that the ‘hard times’ are forcing creative approaches to making money, like buying a metal detector or hey, spending what little you have on the lottery.
The article reports that the world’s largest distributor of metal detectors, Kellyco, is detecting (ha) quite an increase in sales as Americans have given up on the hopeless job market and are looking for, well, buried treasure. And sometimes it works. This phenomenon is not much different than any other form of escapism when the economic environment is poor; during the depression people turned to alcohol and anything that helped them look outside the brutal scope of the reality of the situation. However, the article did mention one woman who has won the Texas lottery four times, earning more than $20 million from it. So, go out and spin the roulette wheel, buy a lottery ticket or metal detector, and don’t listen to this old cynic. Oh, and let us know if you win.
